Soldier Half Marathon

One of our goals this year was to run an official half marathon. We have been training for it for quite some time; I sure hope we are ready. We planned on running in the Soldiers Half Marathon; this is held at Fort Benning. The run is on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 7:30, it snuck up on us, and we only have a few short days left to prepare for it. I hate it when time passes by so fast sometimes.

This is where Wesley, are oldest son went to boot camp, it should be fun to run some of the same roads he did. But we won’t have to carry all the gear that he often had to carry. I was thinking about wearing a pair of his boots to run in but he told me not to, that they would hurt my feet , so there went that idea, he is right his feet were pretty messed up after boot camp. But he was very strong, and we were and still are very proud of him.

This is a picture of us dropping Wes of , where he would soon board the bus that would take him to Fort Benning for boot camp,

The run starts and finishes at the National Infantry Museum, if you haven’t seen it yet you should think about making a trip there to see it. I think anyone would enjoy it.

They have a relay Marathon you can enter as well if you want to run but don’t think you can do the whole thing. You can have a team of two to four runners, I think that would be fun, we may have to do it one day, but I feel for my team as I’ll probably be the weakest link.Wes and Ken

They also have a Soldier 5k, Soldiers Kids Marathon that you could participate in if you would like.

They will have water stations at mile 2.5 and about every two miles until the end so you shouldn’t have to carry your own water for this run.Wes and Ruth

There will also be GU supplement (Energy Gel) spots the first at mile 6.2, then at mile 10, mile 15.8 and mile 18.5.

If you have someone you would like to track on the run and they don’t have a TimexOneGPS+ watch, than you can go to the go to a link that will allow you to key in the bib number or last name of the runner you wish to follow. It is designed to work with smart phones and computers.

Wesley's Graduation! We are so proud of him,
Wesley’s Graduation! We are so proud of him,

Ken and I are planning on running in the Soldier Marathon next year, hope we will live through it. We are talking about doing all the runs, Airforce, Marines, and Navy. We think it would be a fun way to show are support for those that sacrifice so much for our safety each day; they are all heroes in my eyes.

So what do you think would you like to see if you can do this? I think you can. If you haven’t been training for a run like this yet then you can plan on training in order to do it next year. I hope you try it is always good to push your limits, that’s when you see what you are really made of. Hope to see you there.

When are son went into the army we had some dog tag charms made to give to family and friends, as a reminder to pray for him. With these two verses our family picked for a blessing on him. Here are the verses we picked.

2 Samuel 22:3-4

3) The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my savior; thou savest me from violence.

4) I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

Friday Fit Tip – Have you tried apple chips? They are so much better than chips or candy.

Friday Fit Tip – Have you tried apple chips? They are so much better than chips or candy.

One way to help you not snack on all the wrong things is to have better options ready. So when that snack attack comes you have what you need to quench it before you fall into temptation and reach for that ice cream or candy bar.

I have started to make some apple cinnamon chips that are so good you will think you are splurging. You may also have to hide some as everyone will like then, and they’ll disappear faster than you can make them it seems.

You will need

  • ApplesIMG_20151020_092511
  • Cinnamon
  • NutmegIMG_20151020_092944
  • Wash your apples, than slice them. I used my apple peeler; slicer and corer as it gets the job done really fast with uniform size.IMG_20151020_092548IMG_20151020_092746
  • In a small bowl mix together 2 teaspoons cinnamon and ½ teaspoon nutmeg. You should have enough to make quite a few if you want or you can save the cinnamon mix for next time.IMG_20151020_092954
  • Now put your apples into a big bowl and sprinkle them with your cinnamon/ nutmeg mixture and stir until all apples are coated with the cinnamon mixture.IMG_20151020_093149IMG_20151020_093236
  • Next put them on the trays of your dehydrator and follow the directions for your dehydrator in order to prepare them correctly.IMG_20151020_093430
  • Or you can cook them in your oven set at around 160 degrees and cook them until they are dried and crispy.IMG_20151020_095732IMG_20151021_111041
  • Store them in an airtight container after they are cooled completely.IMG_20151021_111435

My children loved these so much that they emptied the top layer of the dehydrator before they were done. I am sure these will be loved by all who try them; you truly can’t eat just one.

Psalms 17:8

Keep me as the apple of your eye, hide me in the shadow of your wings.

I received this TIMEX IRONMAN ONE GPS+ watch in order to review it for you. I wasn’t told what to post, these are my thoughts on this watch after using it.

I think it is pretty AWESOME; there are so many features, that I needed some time to use them.IMG_20150924_080755

First thing you need to do is to charge the watch before you can use it; you need to use the cord that came with it, the charge cord plugs into the USB port on your computer.IMG_20150924_081648 Then you need to follow the directions in order to activate the watch at is pretty easy to do even if you aren’t great with computers. The directions are step by step, you’ll get a code by email to put into your watch, and then you’ll input your profile settings. I really don’t think it’s too difficult, you shouldn’t have any trouble.

Then you’ll be able to take it with you on your next run. I was really excited to take it out for a spin.

One of the really awesome elements of this watch is that after your run, it will automatically upload your work out onto MapMyFitness, RunKeeper or Strava. It will also post your run on Facebook if you like. With a simple touch of the screen it can do so many things. I really like that I don’t need to load my runs, by connecting to a computer, that was always a chore I didn’t like to do. My husband usually did this for me, he’s so sweet. It’s always nice to have something  to save me and my husband time, as time always seems to run away.

One thing that I really adore is that the watch will send me an email to tell me the battery needs to be charged. So love it! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone out to run and my watch was dead or it didn’t even make the first mile of my run.  It’s so nice to have the watch do the remembering for me.

This watch has also included characteristics that I think are needed for women who run alone. It can give live tracking to the people you choose, to be able to track you. They are referred to as angels; they will receive a message which tells them that you have started a workout and they will also be messaged when you’re done. Live trackers will receive a message with a link which they need to open so they can track your workout. Those you have set to be your SOS, they will receive emergency messages from you.

This option is really nice; I was using this while running with my children in order to prepare them for the Paint the Town Pink run that we will all be in soon. It works great; my husband was able to watch us on his phone or his computer. He was able to see right where we were and even the pace at which I was running.Email InviteThis is the email that my watch sent to my husband.Live Track 2

This is when we just started to run.Live Track 3Live Track 4

It also will let you text people you have in your watch, it takes a little time but if you practice you’ll get faster with it. You can type ready-made quotes that you’ll just need to tap to send. This can be very helpful; you can let your running partner know at what mile marker you are at, in case you have trouble or something.

You can also use it to get emergency help if needed. This is a great aspect for those that run alone or really late or early.

You can also program the watch for a workout, so you can stay on track and train just the way you want.

I really fancy that you can also use it for your music. So you can only carry one thing, your watch. I think it’s pretty cool, I love the fact I don’t have headphone cords to get caught up in. This does require Bluetooth headphones.

I wasn’t able to test out the heart rate element, as the sensor’s I have aren’t compatible. I hope to soon get one that will work and I’ll let you know what I think.

I also like the fact that I can read it without any problem; I would always have trouble reading my other watch. But with this one I can easily read it while I run, with only a short glance. Which I really appreciate because I have tripped well let’s say more than once while trying to decipher my watch. This also helps me stay on track with my run and end where I would like to.20151022_191832

So if you want my opinion this is a very good option for you especially if you run alone. I really think this would be a needed watch if you run regularly alone. And who wouldn’t like to only carry on thing while on a run. There are so many things that make this watch a winner in my eyes. So if you are wanting your first GPS watch or an upgrade, then be sure to check this one out for yourself, I’m sure you’ll be just as impressed as I am.
